“Urbanidade experiencial: situações e interações no cotidiano de Paraisópolis, São Paulo (2019)” [Experiential urbanity: situations and interactions in the daily life of Paraisópolis, São Paulo] by Wagner de Souza Rezende | PhD Thesis
Abstract: “This research contributes to the reflection on the influences of the appropriation of favelas’ public spaces in the emergence of an Experiential Urbanity, as opposed to the normative urbanity, prevailing in most contemporary urban contexts. When investigating the determinants socio-spatial processes in the configurations of experiential urbanity, this study was detained in the city and the appropriations (interactions, situations and agents) in Paraisópolis’ public spaces, to better identify the practices of “making City”, aiming to answer the following question: What is the role of the agents (social and material), daily interactions and urban situations in the emergence of urbanity regimes in the daily life in São Paulo’s favela Paraisópolis? Under the support of grounded theory, visual methodology and diagrammatology, we required to know, in a qualitative way, how the Paraisópolis’ residents interact in public spaces in a situational and experiential perspective, exploring the influences of urban tactics in everyday life, based on a case study integrated by three analytical units, that made it possible to examine in depth three urban pathways of this São Paulo’s favela, with support of collaborative mapping, questionnaire and interviews with photo-elicitation. By analyzing these social practices, we contribute to broadening the debate about interactions, situations and regimes of urbanity in favelas, presenting new perspectives for urban studies. Concluding that the appropriations of favelas’ public spaces, in the sphere of residents’ daily practices, contribute to the configuration of experiential urbanity contexts, as they allow the emergence of urban tactics (reactive and creative) as a condition for overcoming social conflicts in these territories.”
