“On the margins and peripheries: An introduction to the female voices of rap made in Portugal (2019)” by Federica Lupati | Article
Abstract: “The success of Hip Hop culture allows us to observe the outcomes of the struggle between centers and peripheries, subcultures and mainstream cultures, in urban and social contexts characterized by inequality, invisibility and prejudice. Yet, asymmetries still take place within Hip Hop affecting its reception and perception. In particular, female voices from rap have been always struggling for recognition, both globally and locally. Portugal represents one more space where invisibility affects the reception of female rappers. The present work offers a brief introduction on Hip Hop culture and discusses how the majority of black female voices from rap made in Portugal have been experiencing a strong lack of visibility.”
