Visual Culture Seminar: We Are Still Here – Galeria Providência

The Visual Culture Seminar “We Are Still Here: Galeria Providência” arose from the presentation of the extension project: “Galeria Providência and CAC/FCS Laboratory: Favela and University together in promoting human and urban development through art”, and gave rise to the documentary of the same name: “We Are Still Here: Galeria Providência”, directed by Cíntia Sanmartin Fernandes, Carla Leal Helal, Cristiane Carvalho Corrêa (Cris Carvalho) and Hugo Oliveira.

The “Galeria Providência” project results from the coordination of Hugo Oliveira, a resident of the community and a PhD graduate from the PPGCom programme at UERJ. The project promotes the social and economic development of residents and the surrounding area, with a special focus on education, culture and health. The partnership established seeks to bring favela residents closer to the university, amplify the voices and bodies that inhabit Providência—considered the oldest favela in Brazil—and valorise its memory through a documentary, local initiatives, and a cartography that allows for a new perspective on this region.
