Se liga no som: As transformações do rap no Brasil [Get a clue in the sound: The transformations of rap in Brazil]
Summary: “An explosive combination of beats, hard-hitting lyrics and innovative singing has seduced a legion of young people and bent even the most conservative critics. This book is an introduction to the history of rap and how it was incorporated into the Brazilian music scene.
You can’t talk about rap without associating it with racism and social inequality. Just like in the United States, Brazilian rappers came out of peripheric neighborhoods to make a name for themselves on the music scene. With confrontational stances, and others that are more appeasing, important questions about Brazilian society emerge in the artistic production of these young musicians.
The ambiguity of public authorities in relation to street battles, the position of rappers in the music market, the support of the music industry and established artists are some of the themes covered in this book, which, far from providing definitive answers, proposes, from an introduction to the history of rap, to provoke, question and raise doubts about this new and, above all, stimulating way of making music.”
The book was released in 2015 by anthropologist Ricardo Teperman, who at the time of its release was also interviewed by Univesp, promiding more details about the creation and themes of the book.
