“‘When i graffiti, I exist’:graffiti as a device for the construction of identity, resistance, and inclusion of youth in the outskirts of brazilian cities (2024)” by Santos et. al. | Article
Abstract: “The objective of this research is to understand how graffiti art contributes to the construction of identity and inclusion of young people in the Manguinhosfavela complex, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The research was conducted in this region, using a case study that covers a territory composed of fifteen favelas. We focused on the “Brabas Crew” project, which has been active in this space since 2017, promoting the reconfiguration of environments abandoned by civil society and the State. The project’s perspective is anchored in the consolidation of the participants’ rights through graffiti art. The central theoretical analysis is based on the studies of Costa (2005; 2007), Paula and Fravetto (2020), among others. A qualitative method (Minayo, 2016) was used, through a case study, with unstructured interviews conducted with the project’s idealizers. We conclude that projects like “Brabas Crew” have the potential to motivate the young participants to seek the expression of their rights and, consequently, contribute to the construction of their identity, resistance, and inclusion in society. This occurs through the recognition of their rights when they express, through graffiti, who they are and the needs they face in the daily life of the favela.”
