“O Sítio das Drogas: Etnografia das Drogas numa Periferia Urbana (2021)” [The Place of Drugs: Ethnography of Drugs in an Urban Periphery] by Luís Fernandes | Book
Synopsis: “There are social worlds which, due to the secrecy of their practices, are simultaneously the target of great fascination and attention and of great prejudice and ignorance. The “world of drugs” is one of them. Based on his ethnographic research, in this book the author takes us on a journey through psychotropic territories: areas on the urban periphery where the daily life of selling and consuming illegal psychoactive substances is lived. In a style closer to narrative than academic text, we are taken to places where the common experience of the city is interrupted, giving way to a street sociability that has drugs as its central element. The book is, after all, a proposal for a close and inside look at this distant category of “marginal worlds”, seeking to shed light on the mechanisms that operate in the production of the city’s backstreets and its fringe actors”
The book is available, in portuguese and open access, at Open Edition.
