Martins, M.L. (2016). Tragic, baroque and grotesque declines in contemporary fashion

" We have a feeling today that we no longer live in a fortunate, providential society. The vertigo,
the crisis, the risk and the end are words we use to characterize the atmosphere of the time we live.
On the one hand, the perception of risk and danger keeps us in constant shock and restlessness.
On the other hand, society lives in permanent flirt with death. Desacralized, secular and worldly,
society spends its life combining Thanatos and Eros. We have here a kinetics, which mobilizes us for
the present, also manifesting in our tragic condition. I think we can say, with rigor, that more than an
atmosphere of time, this kinetics is the characteristic of our culture, which lives its translation from the
regime of the word to the regime of technological image. And we may also add that this translation leaves us
“in suffering of purpose” (Lyotard, 1993, p. 93; Martins, 2002b).'' | More information
