The New Market: transformations and compositions in the urban space of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais
“Public markets have been undergoing transformations in the urban space pertinent to the constant renewal in complex societies where social processes of dissolution and resignification of public spaces occur. The New Market of Belo Horizonte brings together a variety of social groups, from traditional supply market traders to unconventional service providers, such as small printers, luthiers, turners, locksmiths, small businesses, sharing the space with musicians and artists. The building, originally created to supply the Central Market as a complementary supply area, has gone through modifications over time, which involve public and private property aspects in the area where occur several combinations in the coexistence of different kinds of actors and activities. The article analyzes the spaces compositions and networks of social interactions that inhabit such spaces based on participant observation data, informal conversations and the gathering of complementary information”.
