Lisboa, cidade triste e alegre (2022) [Lisbon, happy and sad city] | Documentary

Synopsis: “Directed by João Trabulo, ‘Lisboa, cidade triste e alegre’ [Lisbon, happy and sad city] is a visual poem that portrays the city of Lisbon in the 1950s through the eyes of two friends. The work pays homage to the book of photographs of the same name, which, censored during the Salazar dictatorship, remained unknown until recently.

In 1953, architects Victor Palla and Manuel Costa Martins realized that they both shared an intense love of photographing Lisbon. Together, they photographed the city with the aim of later compiling this adventure into a photography book. More than 6,000 photographs were recorded in the archive. The book remained forgotten for half a century and only after their deaths did it suddenly gain prominence, becoming the most internationally renowned Portuguese photobook of all time.”

The film is available, in Portuguese, on FilmIn Portugal.
