Summary: Sounds are an inseparable part of urban life. From the factory whistle announcing the start of the working day in early modernity to today’s drones hovering overhead, from excavators on construction sites to street musicians, from the wheels of Airbnb guests’ suitcases rolling through neighborhoods to protesters chanting in squares, we are exposed to multiple sounds and reverberations. But what do urban soundscapes tell us? What do sound and silence reveal about urban life? Who has the right to be noisy? What should be silenced? Who has the privilege of speaking and being heard? What kinds of spaces and spatial knowledge are produced through listening?
