European Hip Hop Studies Network (EHHSN) | Platform
The European Hip Hop Studies Network (EHHSN) is an interdisciplinary community of artists, practitioners, and scholars committed to promoting and expanding knowledge about hip hop culture, particularly within the European context. While acknowledging hip hop’s roots in marginalized Black and Latinx communities in the U.S., the group values the diverse meanings and expressions of hip hop across the globe, treating it as a living and constantly evolving culture. EHHSN emphasizes hip hop’s “fifth element” — knowledge — as a tool for production, reflection, and pedagogy, advancing principles such as respect, inclusion, social justice, and the exchange between academia and community. Its activities include preserving oral, written, and audiovisual histories of hip hop in Europe, as well as building collaborative networks among European and non-European researchers and practitioners. The group also hosts annual gatherings, which bring together specialists to discuss contemporary themes related to hip hop and urban street cultures.
