Cidade Cinza

The documentary Cidade Cinza (2013), directed by Marcelo Mesquita and Guilherme Valiengo, introduces us to the artists Os Gêmeos, Nunca and Nina, who give us their views on graffiti, urban art and its importance to the city as an expression, voice and creativity.

The artists, who are world-renowned, had a graffiti mural covered in gray as a result of the actions of the Clean City Law, which was implemented by the former mayor of São Paulo, Gilberto Kassab, in an attempt to make the city visually “cleaner”.

Cidade Cinza also addresses controversies surrounding the implementation of the law, such as the following questions: “who has the power to decide on the use of public space?”, “what are the criteria?” and “who defines these criteria?”. The documentary can be accessed here and has Portuguese subtitles.
