Carquejeiras – As Escravas do Porto

The documentary Carquejeiras – As Escravas do Porto is a tribute to women who, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, played a fundamental role in the development of the city of Porto, in Portugal. Performing a “beast” job, replaced by the human being at a time when survival was a matter of struggle, the Port slaves were forced to carry up to 60 kilos of gorse on their backs in order to support themselves daily. Directed by Arminda Sousa Deusdado and produced by Carlos Rodrigues in 2020, the 51-minute documentary is available so that we can get to know the social imaginary and the memory of a people who lived a silent drama.
