The cases of Coimbra, Porto, Guimarães and Leiria] by Luiz Alberto Brandão Moura | Article

Abstract: “In the following pages, we will analyze the relationship between practices, musical productions and territories, taking as a case study four indie record labels and their impact on cities in Portugal. Emerging at different times, Lux Records, in Coimbra; Lovers & Lollypops, in Porto; Revolve, in Guimarães; and Omnichord Records, in Leiria, operate under DIY and DIT ethics, integrating individuals into their communities through music. They assume the role of transformers of the territory in the fight against precariousness and the lack of structure and investment in cultural activities, as well as being primarily alternatives to the mainstream as a way of giving voice to underground movements. They are active agents in revitalizing and/or adapting spaces for music production and practice, playing a leading role in the decentralization/evolution of music scenes in the country, and are essential in the creation, production and dissemination of Portuguese music. We will pay attention to the Portuguese socio-political and cultural panorama by analyzing the context and dynamics of these labels in innovative musical and artistic creation/production/dissemination, playing a key role in the establishment and development of the indie music segment. We will also see how these labels ‘co-opt’ foreign influences, mixing them with local practices and reconfiguring them as something unique and singular, ‘Portuguese’, but with an eye on the European market.”
