“A cidade pelo estrangeiro: Projetos, práticas e narrativas urbanas de comerciantes imigrantes no Porto, Portugal (2022)” [The city by the abroad: Projects, practices and urban narratives of immigrant merchants in Porto, Portugal] by Priscilla Santos | Article

Abstract: “In this article I intend to analyze the life projects, practices and urban narratives of small immigrant merchants in Bonfim, eastern Porto, Portugal. The data was gathered from an ethnographic research carried out between July 2020 and January 2021 in which I sought to understand how the life projects of these immigrant subjects who open cafes, restaurants and bars in Bonfim are inserted in the urban dynamics of the area and intersect in the strategic plans of the city, which guides itself within the narrative of a competitive and touritic city . I seek to cross ethnographic observations as a Brazilian immigrant-researcher in Porto, Portugal, with the imaginaries, daily practices and narratives about urban change(s) of two of my main immigrant interlocutors: Paul, a British bar owner, and Bruno, a Brazilian bakery owner. The aim is to advance the production of a decentered and relational urban epistemology based on foreigners’ representations of the city.”
