Ece Canlı

Ece Canlı is a vocal practitioner, performance and sound artist, composer, and researcher. Her work explores body politics, extralinguistic expression, counterfactual and marginalised narratives, and the limits of the sounding body. Her tools of investigation include text, extended vocal techniques, electronics, and acoustic matter, in both solo and collaborative endeavours. As a composer, improviser, and producer, Ece has, over the past years, presented numerous solo performances, sound installations, and collaborations with other artists, while also creating sound for stage, exhibitions, choirs, and site-specific, participation-based contexts. She has released two solo albums, VOX FLORA, VOX FAUNA (2020) and S A C R O S U N (2024), and has contributed to various phonographic editions. She also performs and composes in close-circuit projects such as NOOITO (duo) and COBRACORAL (experimental vocal trio).
Ece holds a PhD in Design from the University of Porto and is currently a researcher at CECS, University of Minho, where she investigates the spatial, material, and technological conditions of the criminal justice system, carceral spaces, penal design, and abolition feminism. In 2026-2027 she is the Principal Researcher of the research project CARCERART: Carceral Designs: Gender, Space, and Counter-Narratives of Confinement (2024.13257.PEX) and serves as co-chair of ATGENDER (The European Association for Gender Research, Education and Documentation)(NL). As a researcher and educator, she has lectured, workshoped and published internationally, on themes including queer materialities, embodied voice, decoloniality, politics of design, and penal architecture.
