MOVEMENT 17

The relationship between rest and movement sometimes has inverse oscillations on the physical and mental plane (Dogma of Introspective Intellectual Movement)

The waiter comes out onto the terrace and serves coffee and some cake. He returns inside after having memorized two more orders from other tables. There must be around 30 tables, all occupied, by people, by idleness, by leisure, by communication. This is what going to the café is all about. Whether it’s for residents, tourists, students, the unemployed, pensioners or artists. The journey to the café is made by movement, whether with effort, on foot, by bicycle or scooter, or even without effort, whether by car, motorcycle or public transport, but it is always in movement. The body pauses there. It rests. But that’s precisely where the mind moves the most. Whether it’s the 3 tourists checking the map to see what they’ve seen on the travel guide checklist, the 4 students discussing the Theory of the European Contemporary Movement, the lady telling her niece about her upstairs neighbor’s antics, the lovers discussing which movie they’re going to see that night, or the boy eagerly writing some immaculate poetry in his notebook. It is here that mental activity reaches a much stronger movement than outside, diluted in the movement of the city itself.
