There is poetry “in the streets, in the alleyways, in the courtyards” of Macau

A recent article in the Público newspaper highlights the work of photojournalist Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro, who over the course of five years has sought to capture the soul of Macau in a game of lights and shadows.

Based on a hundred photographs that are part of his new book Poética Urbana [Urban Poetics], Gonçalo believes that there is poetry in the streets, alleys and courtyards of Macau – it is in these places that, in a recurring game of lights and shadows, he searches for “the soul of the city”. As the author said, according to the Público article: “When seen from another angle, the seemingly frivolous moments [that I captured] can reveal the poetry that I love so much; these moments reflect humanity and provoke reflection.” The photographer would like for the reader to feel, while experiencing his images, “connection and nostalgia” – as, for example, in a typical Portuguese sidewalk that can be seen in some of his photos.
