New York’s Canvases

Martha Diamond, a New York-based artist, is known for her lush and loose abstract urban landscapes.

Often referring to the quality of light through fog, reflections on building facades and twilight shadows, Diamond obliterates visual details in favor of suggestion, “bathing her anonymous buildings in the violent tones of New York light, from flaming sunset red to the glowing yellow hues of morning”.

The fluency of Diamond’s brushstrokes allows the distinction between painting, surface, performance, image, idea and expectation – bringing the atmospheric sensation into focus. Capturing the essence of New York itself with its skyscrapers, Diamond’s artworks are rooted in the city’s deep legacy of gestural abstraction.

An artist interview with ArtForum is available here and some of her artwork can be seen here.
